How the liquidation calculator works

  1. Long: liquidation ≈ entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin rate).
  2. Short: liquidation ≈ entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance margin rate).
  3. Exchanges raise the maintenance rate for large positions and charge fees and funding, so the real level is usually a little closer to your entry.

Questions

What is a maintenance margin rate?

The share of the position you must keep as margin. Below it, the exchange closes the position. 0.4% to 0.5% is typical for small positions in major coins; it is higher for small coins and big positions.

Why is 10x leverage liquidated after less than a 10% move?

Because the exchange closes you before your margin hits zero, at the maintenance margin. At 10x and 0.5% maintenance, a long is liquidated about 9.5% below entry.

Does this work for cross margin?

Not exactly. With cross margin your whole account balance backs the position, so liquidation sits further away and depends on your other positions.
